‘Dawson’s Creek’ Was Supposed To End In A Very Different Way

“Dawson’s Creek” was one of the most beloved teen TV dramas of the late 90s and early 2000s. The show centered around a group of friends from a small fishing village on the East Coast. Dawson, played by James Van der Beek, was an articulate teen obsessed with movies. As the main character, Dawson was always looking for his movie-worthy romance and based his life decisions accordingly.

His best friend and girl-next-door, Joey Potter (Katie Holmes) was secretly in love with him. The pair danced back and forth with their feelings for each other before Joey ultimately fell in love with the pair’s other best friend, Pacey Witter (Joshua Jackson).

After six seasons, “Dawson’s Creek” fans waited on the edge of their seat to find out the fates of their favorite characters. (We’re still not over what happened to Jen!). Finally, in the end, it was revealed that Joey and Pacey ended up together. While in the early days of the show, it seemed that Dawson and Joey were endgame, things quickly changed once fans watched Pacey and Joey’s incredible chemistry (via People Magazine).

Joshua Jackson fought for Joey and Pacey to be together on Dawson’s Creek

It has been revealed that the original series finale saw Joey leaving Capside to move to New York and be with Dawson. However, actor Joshua Jackson knew that Joey and Pacey belonged together and fought hard to make it happen, per Buzzfeed.

“I am the advocate!” Jackson told Entertainment Weekly. “I was like ‘Hell no! No no no. That’s not gonna work for me.’ I had a whole conversation with [writer] Kevin [Williamson] about this. Like, ‘Look, I get it. This is the idea that you had in your head, but I’m just gonna ask you to watch the tale of the tape and this is the more interesting end for these characters.'”

Although Jackson knew that Joey and Pacey were meant to be, he wasn’t sure that writers would see it that way. In fact, “The Affair” star says he only found out who Joey ended up with when he received the show’s final script.”

The cast agreed with the ending

“[Kevin Williamson] only came back to write the finale,” Jackson said. “So, I knew whenever we got the finale script.” Thankfully, Van der Beek agreed with the choice for Joey and Pacey to be together, leaving Dawson destined for something, and someone, else. “It felt right to me,” he said during the cast’s 2018 reunion. “It seemed like it made more sense.”

After all these years, fans are still hoping for a “Dawson’s Creek” revival so that they can see what Joey, Pacey, and the rest of the gang have been up to. However, Jackson says it’s not likely.
